Below, are the top five home renovation categories Canadians had planned for 2021, according to Statista.

When we think of home renovations, indoor living spaces often come to mind. But in the past year 54% of Canadians planned to renovate their outdoor space. That’s more than half of the Canadian homeowners that were surveyed.

From decks, and patios to hot tubs and pools, Canadians have been busy creating outdoor living spaces for their personal enjoyment and to entertain family and friends.

Historically, we’ve treated our homes and the outdoors as two separate spaces, but creating a seamless transition from indoor to outdoor living has become more popular in recent years. Bathroom renovations

Historically, bathrooms have been one of the most popular home renovation projects. And this year is no different as 32% of Canadian homeowners plan to renovate a bathroom.

From five-piece ensuites to two-piece powder rooms, Canadians will renovate bathrooms of all shapes and sizes.

Bathroom renovations are popular for two reasons. First, bathrooms are one of the few rooms in our home we use throughout the day, everyday. Second, bathroom renovations tend to be a safe investment for resale.

Kitchen renovations

With the amount of time we spend in our kitchens, it should be no surprise that 23% of Canadian homeowners plan to renovate their kitchen this year.

Like bathrooms, kitchens are one of the few rooms in our home that we use everyday. However, unlike bathrooms, kitchens tend to be gathering spaces. 

Kitchens are no longer an area of the home that are walled off from guests, they’re a focal point of our homes. Today’s home designs often incorporate the kitchen as part of an open concept living area - designed for social gatherings.

Last on the list is appliance upgrades. 12% of Canadian homeowners plan to upgrade their appliances.
